Why Was Dempster the Cubs’ Game One Starter?

Ok Lou Piniella . I understand wanting to reward your players for having a great season and all, but ask any scout-or baseball writer-or anyone who has any lick of baseball common sense, Ryan Dempster shouldn’t be getting the ball in game one of the playoffs. Especially, when you have two true number one starters in Zambrano and Harden. I don’t care that Zambrano struggled toward the end of the season. Even if you don’t agree that Zambrano should get the ball in game one you can’t argue that Harden shouldn’t get the ball with his ERA around 2.00. Either one of those guys should have gotten the ball instead of Dempster. I just don’t get the logic behind it. It’s short best of 5 series. If facing elimination, the Cubs have to rely on Dempster again to go out and prevent that from happening. I’m sorry, but that just doesn’t give me confidence at all. Even if the Cubs win the rest of their games and advance, it was the wrong move. They put themselves in a bad situation. I don’t want to blow a loss of one game out of proportion, but this is the playoffs now. One move like this could mean disaster for confidence and put added pressure on a team that could have been prevented. Admittedly, I haven't followed the matchup talk leading up to the playoffs so maybe I am not up to date on why this decision was made so feel free to set me straight.

Say what you want about Manny Ramirez, but the one thing you can’t argue is that every team he’s played on has become better. Cleveland made it to two World Series with him in the lineup. Boston won 2 World Series with him. Now the Dodgers, who were struggling before his acquisition, are now a legitimate threat in the NL. The same personality traits that cause Manny to, well , be Manny is the same that allows him to absorb all the pressure off of everyone in a clubhouse. One thing is a constant in every dugout that Manny is a part of. Those teams always look like they are having fun. The Dodgers seem to be having fun for the first time in a decade.

It pains me to much to even write anything on this post.

I agree with the Pinella decision, it makes no sense. I have never thought of Ryan Dempster as a #2, much less a #1. Look at that guys resume, it's not all that great. I would have started Zambrano in game 1 followed by Harden. You have to think that they go to L.A. at least 1-1 with Dempster game 3. Now you need Harden to bail them out to get back to him. Pinella is still no Dusty Baker...that guy kills pitchers...ask Jason Schmidt and Robb Nen.

The Manny Ramirez part is true. He is a fun guy to be around, but he stirs up stuff with his lack of hustle. He purposely tanked in Boston to be traded, that's a fact. He hated living in a town with none of his culture any where to be seen. Now he goes to the mecca of latino culture in America, L.A. Now all of a sudden he's running hard, playing to his capabilities. I dislike Manny for being Manny. Would I have wanted his bat behind or in front of Bonds, sure. But even Barry Bonds(who worked extremely hard, but sometimes failed to hustle) would question that guys work ethic. Manny is a winner, always has been. I have always thought he was a better pure hitter than A-Rod, still do. Look at their numbers, Manny dwarfs his numbers in every category except homers, and that is a mere 15 or so off. Still, I hate the Dodgers...only Vin Scully makes them even remotely attractive to me...oh, and Maddux.

I don't what the hubbub is all about..didn't they cancel the MLB postseason? I don't see any Yankees therefore I don't see any postseason. I do hear that J Peavey may be a Yankee next year. CC Sabathia might be but I would rather have Peavey...he's Greg Maddux with a legit fastball. I think that the Cub fans should go back to lowering their standards at the end of the day. Some things are destined to happen and some things aren't.

Man if the Yankees get Peavy I'd be upset. He's the current best pitcher in the game (numbers and his experience). I'd rather the Yankees get CC because the Brewers saw why the Indians traded him. He folds in the playoffs. He's the A-Rod of pitchers.

Poor Cubbies. Game one set the tone for the series and Lou did all he could to make sure that team had added pressure on their backs. It's a shame really.
